Ngapali stretches across several kilometres of white sand in Rakhine State. A preserved beach, fishing villages and sea excursions make this Myanmar coastline a unique beach destination.

Ngapali stretches for several kilometres of white sand along the Bay of Bengal, in Rakhine State, on the west coast of Birmanie. Far from mass tourism circuits, this beach resort remains one of the few stretches of coastline in the country accessible to foreign travellers. Coconut palms, shallow turquoise waters and bustling fishing villages create a setting where the pace naturally slows. The dry season, from October to April, offers ideal conditions to enjoy it.

Practical Information at a Glance

  • Access: domestic flight from Yangon or Mandalay to Thandwe Airport (THL), a few kilometres from the beach.
  • Best season: October to April (dry season); the monsoon (May-September) makes the sea unsuitable.
  • Recommended duration: 3 to 5 days to combine beach, villages and sea excursions.
  • Dress code: no restrictions on the beach; cover up to visit villages and temples.
  • Currency: Myanmar kyat; cash is essential, ATMs are rare.

What You'll See

The main beach stretches for about 3 km, lined with coconut palms and a few discreet hotels. To the north, the fishing village of Jade Taw remains highly active: boats return early in the morning, and women sort and dry fish on bamboo racks. Heading south, the beach becomes wilder and less crowded. Coral reefs accessible for snorkelling can be found around nearby islets.

History and Context

The name "Ngapali" is said to be a distortion of "Napoli": according to local tradition, Italian sailors once landed here and compared the site to the Bay of Naples. The region belongs to Rakhine State, a territory with a complex history, populated notably by Buddhist Rakhines. Seaside tourism developed late here, long preserving the artisanal fishing economy that still structures daily life.

Highlights of Your Visit

The Fish Market at Dawn

Each morning, outrigger boats return laden with the catch. The unloading of fish, the negotiation and drying on the beach form a vivid, authentic spectacle rich in photographic potential. Arrive before 7 am to see the activity at its peak.

Sea Excursion to the Islets

Local boatmen offer outings to small uninhabited islets. Snorkelling here is accessible to beginners, with corals and tropical fish visible in shallow waters. Negotiate directly with fishermen on the beach.

Sunset from the South Beach

The less crowded southern section of the beach offers an unobstructed horizon over the Bay of Bengal. The sun descends directly into the sea, without obstruction, between October and March.

Cycling Along the Coastline

The coastal road is flat and lightly trafficked. Renting bicycles allows you to connect different beach sections, traverse villages and reach isolated coves in half a day.

Photography Tips

Golden morning light, between 6 am and 8 am, is ideal for photographing fishing boats and nets. In late afternoon, coconut palms backlit and reflections on the water create warm images. Always ask permission from fishermen and locals before photographing them.
