The History of Indein

Before British colonization, this small village near Taunggyi was the refuge of a Burmese community. It is said to have been founded following the arrival of Buddhist monks in Birmanie, who came to spread their religion throughout Asia.

Indein Today

This gem of Myanmar has become one of the most sought-after destinations for travelers. A veritable nest of Buddhist temples, Indein houses one of the most significant Burmese and human heritage sites.

The villagers of Indein still make their living from livestock, agriculture, and handicrafts. Even in the heart of the village, you may encounter animals in the streets.

An Artisanal Village

Handicrafts are a defining characteristic of Indein. Lotus or silk fabrics, cigars, jewelry, and more—the production of handmade goods is one of the main activities of the residents. If you pass through this charming town, don't forget to purchase some beautiful souvenirs!

What to See in Indein?

Nestled amid the vegetation, the pagodas are among the main attractions of this destination. Indein is home to two important religious sites: Shwe In Dein and Nyaung Ohak. Many pagodas have remained in their original state, though restoration projects have been underway for some time to strengthen the image of these sites. The restored pagodas of Shwe In Dein gleam golden or white, lending an ethereal quality to the whole. Burmese stupas are characterized by htis, an umbrella-shaped finial that crowns each structure, though most have disappeared over time.

As a note, a photography fee will be requested if you wish to capture your visit. Visiting hours are also limited. But these historical works are truly worth the effort!

The Shwe In Dein Pagoda Complex

Composed of thousands of stupas of varying sizes and shapes, the Shwe In Dein Pagoda proves to be a true Burmese masterpiece. These Buddhist monuments stand at the heart of the village and have weathered the ages. A sacred site bordered by a lake, hills, and waterfalls, Shwe In Dein contains 1054 adjoining pagodas.

According to legend, Shwe In Dein was built three centuries before Christ, with restoration later carried out by King Anawrahta in the 11th century. However, studies have concluded that their construction dates back to around the 12th or 13th century of the Christian era.

Nyaung Ohak Park

Part of Myanmar's archaeological wealth, this second site located behind the village offers a breathtaking setting. Nyaung Ohak houses within its grounds a good number of stupas, Buddha statues, Naga serpents, as well as other sculptures of mystical and mythological beings adorned with stucco. These architectural marvels date back several centuries, and the forests of Nyaung Ohak's pagodas offer a unique and stunning panorama. Not to be missed!
